“More world leaders have sat on that box than any chair in history,” the photographer Platon, owner of that very box, told CNN in an interview conducted over Zoom. One of the girls that Platon photographed there was Esther Faraja. Vladimir Putin, photographed by Platon for Time’s Person of the Year in 2007, initially liked the image that Platon produced. Platon photographed Burmese politician and activist Aung San Suu Kyi in 2010, shortly after she was released from nearly 15 years of house arrest. Platon photographed members of the Burmese LGBTQ+ community who are living in exile and fighting against legislation that criminalizes same-sex behaviour.

Using two tactics to retrain his brain, Karp gained confidence and pursued a career in academia. The MIT and Harvard professor shares the benefits of working in a flow state in his new book. Gittins surrounded the fireplace in this room with a large minotaur head, above which he painted portraits of Greek philosophers. Together they established the Wirral Arts and Culture Community Land Trust (WACCLT), which launched a crowdfunding campaign through the website Ron’s Place, applied for listed status and eventually bought the building last year. Now, the property has been granted “Grade II” listing by Britain’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport on the advice of national heritage body Historic England. Ron’s Place is the first example of Outsider Art to be given protected status in England, according to Historic England. There is little to hint at what lies behind the front door of this red-brick house in Birkenhead, England.

It took a toilet paper shortage for some to come around to the 18th-century invention. A common reason why bidets aren’t used in the US is that during World War 2, American soldiers saw brothels utilizing bidets. Big Toilet PaperWhen the great toilet paper shortage hit in 2020, many Americans realized there could be another way to clean themselves. Using toilet paper had seemed, somehow, American, with toilet paper jokes a staple in bathroom humor and “TP-ing” a stereotypical rite of passage for teens. With the toilet paper mania, she decided to kill two birds with one stone and splurge on a Tushy.

I've traveled solo to all 50 states and nearly every US national park. A few of the unique places I've been include Yellowstone National Park and Biosphere 2 in Arizona. After traveling solo to all 50 states and nearly every US national park, it's rare that I find a place that still surprises me or feels genuinely unique. These unique places are unlike anywhere else, either naturally or due to human influence. Although uniqueness is somewhat subjective, here are eight places I've found to be unforgettable and one of a kind.

The buzziest new entertainment arena is a glowing orb near the Las Vegas strip. The Sphere opened last weekend with a U2 concert attended by the likes of Jeff Bezos and Oprah Winfrey. The biggest draw of the night was arguably not the Irish rock band, though, but the venue itself: the Sphere. Coronations at Westminster Abbey go back almost one thousand years. Like Charles III, William had his coronation at Westminster Abbey. Gross says coronation blunders do not become truly significant for monarchs until their reign starts to go wrong. A “beautiful and symbolic” silver cross containing a piece of the so-called True Cross will lead King Charles’ coronation procession in London next month. Meanwhile, gun salutes will sound from military bases and ships at sea to mark the moment Charles is crowned King.
The people who live inside airplanes

CNN —After losing her house to a fire, Jo Ann Ussery had a peculiar idea: to live in an airplane. She bought an old Boeing 727 that was destined for the scrapyard, had it shipped to a plot of land she already owned, and spent six months renovating, doing most of the work by herself. By the end, she had a fully functional home, with over 1,500 square feet of living space, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and even a hot tub – where the cockpit used to be. Although she wasn’t the first person to ever live in an airplane, her flawless execution of the project had an inspirational effect. Maybe the worst choice for a home.”As a result, Campbell had to work on the plane for a couple of years before being able to live in it.

My $40,000 salary was barely enough to get by, but when I got a $5,000 bonus, I suddenly felt rich. Even living in Birmingham, Alabama, I quickly realized how little my $40,000 a year paycheck actually was. When bonus time rolled around, usually toward the end of summer and right before the winter holidays, it felt like I'd won the lottery. All of which is to say, it was a big expense — one that a $5,000 bonus could have knocked out with money to spare. My bonus wasn't really a bonus, but a necessityI realized the company was using bonuses to pay us a living wage, when that's not what a bonus is supposed to be.

“FIRE OF LOVE,” the Oscar-nominated 2022 documentary about two star-crossed volcanologists, reflects our fascination with the earth’s eruptions. “Working on the film, I visited two volcanoes—Fagradalsfjall on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula, and Anak Krakatau, off the coast of West Java,” said Sara Dosa, director and producer of the National Geographic documentary. “We were awestruck by the molten rivers pouring down the mountainside—a seemingly surreal color of orange.”Elsewhere, Kilauea’s fireworks on the Big Island of Hawaii kicked off 2023 and, on screens, Sicily’s Mt. Etna loomed as a backdrop for the sexual shenanigans in “The White Lotus.”
WELLINGTON, New Zealand — New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern appeared awestruck Thursday to be standing in the Antarctic hut of explorer Ernest Shackleton. “I think when you’re a kid and you read stories about Shackleton, you’d never imagine you’d have the opportunity to come. So, I feel pretty lucky,” she said from inside the hut that was built more than a century ago. Conservationists say new marine protected areas and rules to prevent overfishing in Antarctica are desperately needed, but that Russia could use its veto-like powers to once again block progress. The motivation for Russia, which did not respond to requests for comment this week, remains unclear.
Recently, orcas have been observed ramming and sinking boats off the coasts of Spain and Morocco. The whales began chasing the boat, and what appear to be playing in its wake.
